Review | Botanics Smoothing Eye Make Up Remover

Tuesday, 24 September 2013

Whilst in Boots a couple of weeks ago I was wandering up and down the aisle when I saw this eye make up remover. All of the Botanics product were half price (I think it was less than £2 so it was dirt cheap) so I thought it would be a good opportunity to buy it as I was in need of some eye make up remover.

What it says: The clear oil phase effectively sweeps away impurities and make up, including waterproof impurities. The aqueous phase is given its colour by hibiscus, and helps to soothe the eye are and conditions lashes.
Hibiscus is nature's brightness booster and a wonderful hue of pink. Natural AHA's from the flower act as mild exfoliators to help leave skin smoother and brighter.
Our beauty scientists use active plant extracts approved by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to bring you beautiful skin care that's proven to work.

What I think: I have to truthfully say that I find it a little disappointing . When it comes to removing my eye make up I need something quick and easy, I hate having to wipe my eyes over and over again as it can damage the skin below the eye area. Just thinking about pulling at the skin makes me fee all weird, bleugh.

When I first tried it I didn't read the directions, it says you have to shake it before use. I applied the product onto the cotton wool without shaking it and wiped my eyes and found that it did nothing. I thought that the product was a complete waste of time until I found that you did have to shake before use. I have no idea why I didn't shake it to begin with considering the product had separated and was two different colours, I'm such an idiot.

When I used it for the second time, I shook it vigorously hoping that it would finally work. To begin with,  I had to repeatedly wipe my eyes to get it off but I then I started to leave the product to soak up the mascara for longer, maybe about 10 to 15 seconds. I thought that I had removed all of my mascara and that the product had finally done it's job but it hadn't. I could still feel little bits of mascara on my eye lashes when I got into bed. I didn't really think much of it as I thought it was only a little tiny bit left on my lashes. The morning after I had applied it, I looked in the mirror only to find that I had panda eyes.

I have no idea if I'm applying this product correctly or not or if I'm wearing way too much mascara. I hate to say it but I would give this product a thumbs down, I don't think I would repurchase it. To be honest, I don't want to continue using it but I'm going to have to make do until I find another eye make up remover.

Benefit of the doubt:
  • It will probably last you a life time. I've had it for maybe about 3/4 weeks and I've barely used any of it.
  • It's inexpensive, especially if you get it half price.
  • The packaging is okay, it looks very professional.

The bad bits:
  • It leaves the area around my eyes feeling really oily and greasy. I'm not sure if it's because I have oily skin in general or I'm using too much of it. Either or, I really don't like it. I wouldn't ever use this product in the morning if I'm about to go out somewhere, I have a feeling it would ruin the make up around that area.
  • I've still yet to see if it will remove all of my mascara.
  • It claims to condition lashes but I don't it's actually possible to condition eye lashes, is it possible?
